Experience Overview

Summary

In 2019, I decided to take General Assembly's User Experience Design Immersive course. This was my journey from initiation to completion.

I also documented 'one thing a day' on my company LinkedIn page, as a way to diarise what I learnt on the course.

Key Deliverables

Interview stage: UX Project

Pre-course work: ~30 hours of assessment

Course: 8 Modules, 4 projects, and 1 client delivery

Interview Stage

For the interview stage, where GA decides on potential candidates, I was asked to develop a project based on one of a number of potential briefs.

I chose to use my 'outside of the box' design thinking to take on this challenge. Not only did this include my design process but the actual delivery of the final prototype. This also proved my capability of rapid prototyping.

Based on this submission and a follow up interview, I was accepted onto the course.

Pre Course Work

After getting confirmation of acceptance I was given access to all of the pre-course work material. There was close to 30 hours of work to complete!

The Course

At the end of July 2019, the course began. It was a big commitment to make and an opportunity to be in The Big Smoke.

On the first I saw two of my classmates shy but eager to begin the journey. I started introducing myself to break the ice. Eventually the tutor and teaching assistant arrived and got things under way. I think it took the first week to get comfortable with the class. Looking back, there was no need to be apprehensive.

Here is an overview of what we covered on the core 10 weeks of the course:

Outcomes

The overall experience at GA has been once in a lifetime. The people that I have met and the things I have learnt have made an impact on me, for which I am grateful.

Having graduated, my next steps are to launch myself into the UX world by building out my network and applying for roles. I want to build rapport with key individuals so that I can learn from them and see if they would consider mentorship.

My aspiration for many years has to become an experience architect - some have believed it's to be an astronaut, understandably considering my obsession with NASA. I believe that this site is a testament to my experience, skills and work ethic. I hope that my enthusiasm and ability are noticed so that I can achieve that ultimate goal...
